Keeping Synodontis Aquarium Catfish

synodontis catfishMost fish keepers like to have some bottom feeders in their aquarium. They can do a great job mopping up little pieces of food that larger, messier fish leave behind. Traditionally, this job has been done by the plecostomus, however catfish are starting to make a return to popularity in the hobby, and it is easy to see why.

With beautiful finnage and a relatively gentle temperament, synodontis catfish are omnivorous scavengers that will eat algae, pellets, flakes and even live food if they’re larger than it.

Sick Discus Medication And Care

Discus Medication

Because Discus cannot be considered particularly hardy fish, it is wise to have certain medications on hand when you keep them. These include:

  • Prazi (Droncit) A gentle worming medication that treats worms and flukes.
  • Metro (Metronidazole 400mg Tablets) An antibiotic.
  • Furan2 For the treatment of bacterial diseases.
  • Aquarium Salt Though not a medication itself, aquarium salt is very useful in preventing ich, a common fish disease, and is widely regarded as being very good for the general health of your fish.

Fake Aquarium Plants

I prefer fake aquarium plants for many reasons. Allow me to list some of them for you:

* Fake plants require no additional sunlight, which can cause the aquarium owner to constantly battle against algae.
* Fake plants require no additional C02, which saves the aquarium owner the need to buy a C02 set up.
* Fake plants will not die and decay, fouling the water and causing spikes in dangerous chemicals.
* Fake plants cannot be eaten by boisterous, hungry fish such as cichlids.
* Fake plants will not be uprooted by the aforementioned boisterous fish.

How To Keep Jack Dempsey Fish

Part One

When it comes to choosing aquarium fish, there are a wide range to choose from. From small schooling fish that shoal beautifully about the aquarium, to large oddball fish which delight and surprise. The Jack Dempsey falls somewhere in the middle of the two extremes.

A gorgeous fish with oodles of personality and brilliant coloring, the Jack Dempsey is named after the famous boxer of the same name. Like their namesakes, Jack Dempseys have a reputation for wanton aggression, however their charms far outweigh their quirks. (If murdering fish could be considered a quirk.)

Tank Mates For Jack Dempseys

The Jack Dempsey is also quite a territorial, and yes, aggressive fish. It cannot be kept with smaller fish because they will quite quickly become dinner. As the Dempsey ages, its aggression only increases, so be aware that the baby Dempsey currently living happily with smaller fish may one day eat them. A lot of people get young Jack Dempsey’s and then scoff at the reports of their aggression only to find that one morning, a few months later, half their tank is missing or maimed.

What Size Fish Tank Should I Buy?

The Largest Aquarium In The World

The Largest Aquarium In The World

Unfortunately, many people buy their fish tanks before they buy their fish. Whilst this seems to make total sense (where are you going to put the fish if you don’t have a tank for them?) It can be misguided as people buy tanks without having thought about what fish they are going to put in them and end up with fish that are incompatible with the tank or with each other.
